LAW

About the Program

The undergraduate education of law entails a curriculum of 240 ECTS credits in 4-year normal period of study, which consists of 8 semesters. At the Department, like the other departments at our university, 1 ECTS is equivalent to 30 hours of student involvement per semester.
The main objective of the Department is to educate and train law students; who fit in knowledge-based times complying with relations of production in the present information society; who, as practitioners of law, integrate into society with their law education which embraces universal values and instills how to learn afterwards; who, with their profession and professional identity as law practitioners, are at the forefront of social development, beyond being a member of the ideal information society.
Today’s world with growing complexity of international relations brings out the need for law students who make the best of foreign languages in their academic and professional lives and can resolve and settle legal disputes amicably. The Faculty of Law at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, in order to meet the aforementioned need, aims to educate law students who can deal with national and international legal questions and disputes, and who have the knowledge, skills and competencies for settlement of such legal disputes. Thus, the Department brought a program into being so that students, in addition to acquainting oneself with theoretical knowledge and having a good grasp of legal methodology, can attain the ability of analytical thinking.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Procedures to recognise prior learning (RPL), including non-formal and informal learning, is in an early stage of development in Turkey and there is no a comprehensive and enabling legislative framework at the national level in place yet. However, within the institutional autonomy respected there are some implementations at the institutional level for allocating credits towards exemption from some programme requirements on the basis of RPL. This is particularly a wide spread exercise implemented in cases that students, having a certain level of knowledge, skills and competencies in relation to fields such as foreign languages and computer use, prior to admission to the university, are subjected to an examination and if they are found successful to a certain degree required by the programme they have been admitted to, they are exempted from the relevant course units of the course programme. RPL is also practiced for students who wish to transfer their studies to the equal or an upper levels at an another institution including those from abroad in the same or similar fields. In such cases, students, having received some course units in a previous programme they had studied and having been successful, may be  exempted from the same or similar course units of the programmes they are admitted to upon the approval the adaptation committees of the programmes.

Such procedures of recognition are also used comprehensively in practice at our university. The general arrangements for the recognition ofsuch implementations are outlined in the relevant section of our Education and Examination Regulations, Rules & Regulations for Graduate Programmes and that of Regulations for Lateral Transfer of Students.

Employment Opportunities

What we infer from this situation is that it is essential to incorporate jurists who can especially use English language to reach universal information, who can follow the new developments and who can use information technologies and computer satisfactorily. Along with traditional law courses, we offer the latest developments about the newly developing fields of law whose popularity have been rising. Therefore, we offer undergraduate and graduate course in the fields of International Arbitration Law, Internet Law, International Trade Law, Intellectual Property Law, Competition Law, Banking Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, European Union Law. Besides classical jurisdiction procedures, alternative dispute resolution methods such as arbitration, mediation and reconciliation which have been extensively used in the world, will be identified in detail and the faculty prepares students to become the jurists of the future.
