Course Objective
The purpose of this module is to enable our students to have the ability to read and understand the historical legal texts, in particular Mecelle, written in Ottoman Turkish. One of the purposes of this module is also to improve the understanding and knowledge of students on historical documents. The opportunity to compare some points like language, form, method, content used in historical and contemporary laws and legal texts is also provided to students.
Course Content
The section of general principles which consists of the first one hundred articles of the statute, called Mecelle-i Ahkam-i Adliyye, on private law made in 1876 will be read and expounded.

In midterm and final exams, students are required to transliterate the texts in Ottoman Turkish into Latin letters

Course Learning Outcomes
- Students are expected to have acquired the ability to analyse legal matters from different perspectives
- Students are expected to have acquired the ability to think critically
- Student are expected to have acquired basic knowledge on Usûl-i Fıkh (Methodology in Islamic Law)
- They will have the opportunity to use the language better by increasing their word capacity
- They will read Ottoman legal texts from original copies in Ottoman Turkish
- They will have the skill to read the Ottoman archive materials
- They learn and know the definitions of the legal terms bu understanding the meaning of the words in Ottoman Turkish
