Course Objective

The purpose of this module is to teach students Ottoman Turkish. By teaching Ottoman alphabet and grammar, students are enabled to read millions of legal, scholarly and literary texts in our libraries and archives and to understand the meaning of words used in them. Rich vocabulary, students will acquire through this module, will give them the opportunity to develop their oratorical talent that they will need in their career.

Course Content

Letters in Ottoman alphabet, grammar, principles and rules about writing and reading of words in Ottoman Turkish, rules about writing letters, types of scripts in Ottoman Turkish particularly naskh and riqa

  6. Students will have the ability to read texts written in nesih and rik'a script
  7. Students will be expected to have learned the principles for writing in Ottoman Turkish
