Library Rules

Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University began teaching in the 2011-2012 academic year. The IZU Library opened for service at the same time.

We aim to continuously improve ourselves in order to support the University's education and teaching activities as effectively as possible. With this in mind, alongside printed books, periodicals and similar resources, we also provide a substantial number of electronic databases. With a gross area of 13,500 m2 and capacity for more than 1,000 users at the same time, our Central Library is one of the largest libraries in Istanbul. Our printed book collection has exceeded 130,000 volumes.

Together with the electronic books made available, our total number of books exceeds half a million. Our students and staff can also access electronic resources from off campus.

Our students and staff, as well as researchers from outside the institution, may benefit from library services within the framework of the rules below.

1. Students and academic and administrative staff of our University are considered natural members of the library. However, in order to borrow books, they must present their institutional ID card and complete their membership.

2. As a requirement of inter-university cooperation, our library is open to academic staff and active doctoral and master's students of other universities, provided that they present current documentation and obtain permission. However, these users may only borrow material through their own university's library.

3. Academic staff may borrow 10 books for a period of 2 months. Students may borrow 3 books for 15 days and administrative staff for 30 days. Reference works such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries and atlases may be borrowed only one at a time and for 7 days. The loan period may be extended twice, provided that the book is presented at the library and has not been requested by another user. Where necessary, the Directorate may redetermine loan periods and the number of items that may be borrowed.

4. Library materials may not be taken out without permission. Legal action will be taken against those who attempt to remove material without permission.

5. The following books are not loaned out.
• Theses, rare works and works published before 1960.
• Textbooks identified by academic staff as not to be loaned out.

6. Upon graduation or cancellation of their registration, students must obtain a clearance certificate from the library. Clearance certificates are not issued to students who have outstanding obligations to the library.

7. Staff leaving the University due to retirement, transfer, resignation, military service or similar reasons must return the books they have borrowed and obtain a clearance certificate from the library. Clearance certificates are not issued to staff who have outstanding obligations to the library.

8. No further material is loaned to users who have not returned borrowed material after the loan period has expired.

9. Individuals from outside the institution who wish to carry out research on any subject may use our library during the permitted periods. Such individuals must apply by e-mail (kutuphane@izu.edu.tr).
Where deemed necessary, and particularly during midterm and final examination periods, our library may restrict the usage rights of visitors from outside the institution. Information on whether any restrictions are in place, together with the current status, can be found on our library web page.

10. Members of IZU may request books, journals and other materials to be added to the Library.
Such requests may be submitted;
• by completing the purchase request form available on our library web page,
• by official letter from a Faculty or Department Chair.
Requests are processed and the materials in question are acquired for the library.

11. Food and drink (except water) may not be brought into our libraries. Computers in the library may not be used for purposes other than education; this also applies to personal computers. Playing games and watching series, cartoons, films, sports matches and the like is not permitted. Permission must be obtained from the Directorate for video recording, interviews and similar activities within the library, even when carried out for promotional purposes.

12. Penalty Provisions:
• A fine of 1 lira per day is applied for each book or journal that is borrowed and not returned on time. Users whose fines exceed 50.00 TL may not borrow books.

• For library material that is lost or damaged beyond repair, the borrower is required to provide an identical copy or a more recent edition. If neither an identical copy nor a more recent edition can be found, 150% of the current market value of the material is collected from the borrower.

• If a staff member fails to return borrowed material after a 2nd reminder notice, the material is presumed lost. In this case, 150% of the current market value of the material is reported to the Budget Directorate to be deducted from the person's salary.

• Amounts collected for material returned late or lost are recorded as University income. These revenues are used primarily for the needs of the Library.

• Disciplinary proceedings are initiated against those who act contrary to library rules. Where deemed necessary, the right to pursue legal remedies is exercised.
