PART ONE
Introductory Provisions

Purpose

ARTICLE 1- (1) The purpose of this Directive is to regulate the procedures and principles concerning the compulsory summer internships of the students of the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University.

Scope

ARTICLE 2- (1) This Directive covers the provisions concerning the planning, conduct, monitoring and assessment of the compulsory summer internships of the students of the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University.

Legal Basis

ARTICLE 3- (1) This Directive has been prepared on the basis of the provisions of Higher Education Law No. 2547, Social Insurance and Universal Health Insurance Law No. 5510, the Framework Regulation on Applied Training in Higher Education, the Ministry of Health Regulation on the Operation of Inpatient Treatment Institutions, the Regulation on the Determination of the Minimum Training Requirements of Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Architecture Education Programmes, and the Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Undergraduate Education and Instruction Regulation.

Definitions

ARTICLE 4- (1) In this Directive;

a) Head of Department: The Head of the Department of Nursing of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
b) Department: The Department of Nursing of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
c) Dean: The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
ç) Faculty: The Faculty of Health Sciences of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
d) Commission: The Departmental Internship / Practicum Commission appointed by the Deanery upon the proposal of the Head of Department and responsible for the coordination and supervision of internships and practical training,
e) Student: The student undertaking the internship,
f) Rector: The Rector of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
g) Senate: The Senate of Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
ğ) Internship Period: The compulsory internship period specified in the curriculum,
h) University: Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University,
ı) Summer Internship Supervisor: The instructor responsible for the course in which the internship is undertaken,
shall have the meanings set out above.

PART TWO
Duties and Responsibilities

Head of Department

ARTICLE 5- (1) The Head of Department is responsible for the conduct of summer internships. Where deemed necessary, the Head of Department may delegate this authority, in whole or in part, to the deputy head of department or to a faculty member of the Department, with the approval of the Dean.
(2) The duties of the Head of Department concerning the summer internship are as follows:
a) To take the necessary measures to ensure that the summer internship is conducted in full compliance with the legislation.
b) To liaise with the relevant managers of the institution where the summer internship will take place in order to obtain the necessary permissions and to ensure that official correspondence is carried out.
c) To inspect summer internship activities on site where deemed necessary.
ç) To assess the suitability of the institution where the summer internship will take place.

Departmental Internship / Practicum Commission

ARTICLE 6- (1) The Commission consists of the Head of Department, the Deputy Head of Department and the members of the Internship / Practicum Commission.

(2) The duties of the Departmental Internship / Practicum Commission are as follows:
a) To ensure that the summer internship is conducted in accordance with its objectives and principles, to resolve problems arising during the internship process and to report them to the Head of Department where deemed necessary.
b) To ensure that the summer internship is conducted in full compliance with the legislation.
c) To plan the internship schedule, internship placements and the distribution of students; to ensure the necessary coordination with the relevant institutions.
d) To assess the suitability of the institutions where summer internships will take place and to follow up the necessary correspondence/protocol procedures.
e) To determine the summer internship schedule, the application process and the internship start and end dates, to submit them for the approval of the Head of Department and to ensure that they are announced to students.
f) To prepare or update the forms, files and other documents relating to summer internships.
g) To inform students about the internship process, its rules, the assessment criteria and the documents to be submitted.
h) To examine internship documents; to assess students' achievement and to report the results to the Head of Department.
i) To evaluate objections concerning internship results in line with the relevant legislation and to report the outcomes to the Head of Department.

 

Summer Internship Supervisor

ARTICLE 7- (1) The Summer Internship Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that internships are conducted in accordance with the objectives, principles and learning outcomes of the relevant course.

(2) The duties of the Summer Internship Supervisor are as follows:
a) To propose to the Head of Department the placements where the summer internship will take place and the start and end dates to be determined in line with the academic calendar.
b) To prepare the documents to be sent to the institutions and organisations where the summer internship will take place and to follow up their dispatch to the relevant persons, institutions and organisations.
c) To announce the internship assessment principles to students at the beginning of the term and to follow up the completion of the necessary forms and forward them to the Head of Department.
ç) To ensure that summer internships are conducted in an orderly, effective and proper manner; to resolve problems arising during the internship process and to report them to the Head of Department where deemed necessary.
d) To submit to the Head of Department, for necessary action, the findings made by the relevant parties and the reports drawn up concerning students who act contrary to the internship rules.

Duties and Responsibilities of Students

ARTICLE 8- (1) The duties and responsibilities of students undertaking a summer internship are set out below:

a) To comply with the working order, disciplinary rules and occupational health and safety provisions of the institution where they undertake their internship.
b) To wear clothing appropriate to the nature of the work throughout the internship.
c) To carry out the tasks assigned to them at the internship placement on time, in full and in accordance with instructions.
ç) To act in accordance with professional ethical principles, confidentiality rules and a professional team approach in their communication with institutional staff and the people served.
d) To use all tools, equipment and devices at the internship placement with care.
e) Not to take any written document belonging to the institution where they undertake their internship or to its staff without permission; not to take photographs or make audio or video recordings of patients or the institution, and not to share them in any way.
f) To report any occupational accident occurring during the internship to the Summer Internship Supervisor on the same day.
g) To pay attention to general health, hygiene, personal cleanliness and care, and to the cleanliness of their attire, in accordance with the requirements of the nursing profession.
ğ) To take notes on the work they carry out during the internship, to compile these notes into a report at the end of the internship, to complete in full the forms they are required to use, and to submit the relevant forms and the report to the Summer Internship Supervisor within the specified period.
(2) The disciplinary provisions of Higher Education Law No. 2547 concerning students shall be applied to students who act contrary to the rules.
(3) Students are liable for any damage arising as a result of their faulty conduct within the framework of the provisions of the relevant legislation.

PART THREE
General Principles

Summer Internship, Timing and Duration

ARTICLE 9- (1) In order for students of the Department of Nursing to undertake their summer internships, they must have passed the relevant professional courses.
(2) Summer internships are carried out from the end of the spring semester final examinations of the relevant academic year until the course start date of the following academic year.
(3) The summer internship periods for students of the Department of Nursing are as follows:
a) In the second year, the Internal Medicine Nursing Internship of 15 working days and the Surgical Diseases Nursing Internship of 15 working days.
b) In the third year, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Nursing Internship of 15 working days and the Child Health and Diseases Nursing Internship of 15 working days.
c) Each working day consists of nine hours.
(3) Attendance at the summer internship is compulsory. The summer internship is carried out without interruption and may not be divided.
(4) Students who wish to undertake their compulsory summer internships abroad within the framework of exchange programmes may apply provided that the institutions and the programme in which they wish to undertake the internship meet the conditions set out in this Directive.

Summer Internship Exemption

ARTICLE 10- (1) Exemption requests are handled within the scope of the provisions of the University's Exemption and Adaptation Directive.

Summer Internship Placement and Its Arrangement

ARTICLE 11- (1) Internships may be undertaken at health institutions and organisations in Turkey or abroad.

(2) The summer internship may be undertaken at fully equipped university hospitals, training and research hospitals, city hospitals, state hospitals and private hospitals with a capacity of at least 100 beds and with a ward corresponding to the course in which the internship is undertaken.

Principles for Conducting the Summer Internship

ARTICLE 12- (1) The Head of Department announces the summer internship application dates in the last week of the spring semester.
(2) Students are responsible for finding their own internship placements.
(3) In order to determine their internship placements, students complete the forms designated by the Head of Department for the compulsory summer internship and submit them to the Summer Internship Supervisor for presentation to the Head of Department for approval.
(5) The documents deemed appropriate by the Head of Department are submitted for the approval of the Deanery.
(6) During the internship, students work under the supervision and responsibility of the ward supervisor assigned by the hospital authorities, complying with the working hours and working order of the institution where they undertake their internship.
(7) The Internship Assessment Form for the relevant applied course is submitted by the student to the authorised officer of the health institution.
(8) The Internship Assessment Form completed by the authorised officer of the health institution may be handed to the student in a sealed envelope bearing a seal or stamp, or may be sent to the Deanery. If any erasure, alteration or similar correction is made while completing the Internship Assessment Form, it must be initialled by the relevant parties and sealed or stamped; otherwise the student's internship shall be deemed invalid.

Internship Attendance and Excuses

ARTICLE 13- (1) Attendance at the internship programme is compulsory. Since occupational accident and occupational disease insurance will be arranged during the internship period pursuant to Article 5/b of Law No. 5510, students must undertake their internships on the dates stated in their Compulsory Internship Forms. Students who have applied for an internship but are unable to undertake it for any reason must notify the Head of Department in writing by petition and by e-mail no later than 10 days before the internship begins.

(2) In the cases set out below, students may be deemed excused for the days on which they did not attend the internship, with the favourable opinion of the Internship/Practicum Commission and the approval of the Head of Department, provided that they apply to the Head of Department within five days at the latest following the end of the excuse:

a. Illness documented by a report obtained from a health institution stating that the student is unable to continue the internship,

b. Absences not exceeding three working days, other than illness, due to natural disasters, family reasons and other similar grounds, for which the institution's internship supervisor has granted written permission.

(3) For students who must make up an internship because it remained incomplete for any reason, occupational accident and occupational disease insurance is extended until the end of the make-up period.

Assessment of the Summer Internship

ARTICLE 14- (1) Students' summer internship files are evaluated by the Internship/Practicum Commission. The result of the assessment is decided as "Pass" or "Fail" and announced.
(2) Students must submit their summer internship files to the Internship/Practicum Commission no later than the second week of the new academic semester following the internship. The internships of students who fail to submit the internship assessment form and other relevant documents within the prescribed period, or whose submitted forms and documents are incomplete or improperly completed, shall not be accepted and shall be deemed unsuccessful.
(3) If the internship assessment form and other relevant documents are sent by post, the student is responsible for any loss or delay that may occur in the post.
(4) Internships deemed unsuccessful by the Internship/Practicum Commission are repeated in the same year or in the following year, with the dates and internship field specified.
(5) A student may object to the result of the summer internship by petition submitted to the Head of Department within five days of the announcement of the results. The objection is evaluated and decided by the head of department and the Internship / Practicum Commission and the outcome is announced.

PART FOUR
Miscellaneous and Final Provisions

Insurance Procedures and Premium Payments

ARTICLE 15- (1) The insurance procedures and insurance premium payments to be made during students' summer internships pursuant to subparagraph (b) of the first paragraph of Article 5 of Social Insurance and Universal Health Insurance Law No. 5510 are covered and carried out by the University within the framework of the provisions of the relevant legislation.
(2) Students who will undertake an internship abroad are themselves responsible for matters relating to "Occupational Accident and Occupational Disease Insurance".

Cases Not Covered by These Principles

ARTICLE 16- (1) In cases not covered by this Directive, the provisions of the relevant legislation and the decisions of the Council of Higher Education and the Senate shall apply.

Entry into force

ARTICLE 17- (1) This Directive applies as of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Execution

ARTICLE 18- (1) The provisions of this Directive are executed by the Dean.
