Course Objective
This course summarizes the broad field of Ottoman economic and social history. It aims to introduce the students with the various economic activities and social relations that evolved during the agesold lifespan of the Ottoman Empire. This course also sheds light on the Ottoman economic thought concerning the governing of economy, state and society. This holistic value system existed of princples on morality, politics and economics.
Course Content
In order to understand the long term continuity and moments of ruptures in the Ottoman economic history, this course focuses on the changes and continuity of the social conditions and on the various economic structures in the broad geography of the Ottoman Empire. It also explains the key principles of Ottoman economic thought that played a decisive role in governing and managing of various economic activities in the Ottoman lands. We will discuss and try to understand these key ideas and values that formed the Ottoman economic world view and how they directed the different economic activities and relationships ranging from agriculture and land regime to commerce and financing.
Course Learning Outcomes
- To gain competence on the world economic history and the Ottoman economic history that constitutes an important part of it.
- To read the history of Ottoman economics by opening new fields by changing the Western and Orientalist historical thought categories.
- To develop a perspective to capture the integrity of the process of change and transformation in Ottoman economic history.
- To understand the long-term economic continuity and breakdowns by following the different economic processes in the wider Ottoman geography, the life conditions of people and the change of social order.
- Comparatively analyzing the process that created capitalism and its economic and social implications in the Ottoman geography
- To explain the basic ideas that make up the Ottoman economic worldview and to understand how they directed the economic functioning and relations in the Ottoman world from agriculture to land regime, trade and finance.
- To have the vision of searching for new models with the critical approach to be taken in the field of Islamic Economics and Finance through the Ottoman Economic History and the awareness of her own belief, moral and historical background.
- To have knowledge about the internal chaos and discussions of social sciences, how it approaches the past and sources of information, the method it uses, and the questions about the nature of the science and knowledge it produces.
