ELT 521 - New Trends in English Language Teaching

Course Objective

This course follows three main objectives:

  1. To introduce recent theories in English language teaching methodology and SLA.
  2. To reveal how these new perspectives can assist language teachers to become more informed decision makers and improve their teaching practice.
  3. To become familiar with some research related to the topics discussed and provide insights on how similar studies can be conduct in the context of Turkey.

Course Content

The course will examine recent trends in ELT including CLT, task-based language teaching, content-based instruction, competency-based instrcution, standard education, text-based approach to language teaching, strategy-based instruction and finally introduces the main features post-method. It also examines the second language acquisition theories that have had largest impact on language teacging including cogntive, interactionist and socio-cultural theories.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be familiarized with the most recent teaching methods introduced in 20 century
  2. Students will have ideas on how to conduct studies that are in line with common trends in ELT
  3. Students will develop some initial understanding on the interfact between language acquistion theories and language methodolgy
  4. Students will be familiar with the important factors required for sound studies in applied linguistics
