Course Objective
This course covers major theoretical approaches ranging from classical sociology to contemporary social theory. Fundamental concepts such as hegemony, ideology, structure and subject, power, culture, everyday interaction, and risk society are discussed through the works of Gramsci, the Frankfurt School, Althusser, Saussure, Goffman, the Chicago School, Foucault, Habermas, Giddens, Bourdieu, Mann, Alexander, and Beck. The course aims to analyze the relationships between different theoretical perspectives in a comparative manner.
Course Content
The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the fundamental approaches and concepts of sociological theory within their historical and theoretical contexts; and to develop their ability to analyze social phenomena from different theoretical perspectives. The course aims to enable students to critically evaluate the relationship between theory and social reality.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Evaluate current social problems within the framework of sociological theory.
- Define the basic approaches and representatives of sociological theory.
- Analyze different theoretical perspectives comparatively.
- Interpret social phenomena through the concepts of structure, power, culture, and interaction.
