PSK 327 - Cross-Cultural Psychology

Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to provide information at the level of introduction to cross-cultural psychology. Accordingly, the effects of the ethnic origin and culture on the social well-being and growth as the former two interact with one another will be studied. Within the scope of the course, both intracultural and intercultural diversities will be investigated. Main topics of intercultural psychology will be both discussed in a theoretical framework and reviewed in the light of the recent researches.

Course Content

Topics will be covered by the lecturer in parallel with the textbook and the students are expected to share their views and will be encouraged to approach critically towards the topics. The content of the course is structured in accordance with the needs of the students as well as scientific developments. The exams will cover both the reading texts and the discussions held in the classroom.

Explanations

Midterm 20 % + Class Participation 5 % + Group work 15 % = 40 %;

Final  30 %  + Class Participation 5 % + Project 25 % = 60 %.

Group works includes foreign students and targeted to compare psychological concepts within cross-cultural perspective. 

Rules

Attandance to lessons is essential.

Min. attandance is 70 % required.

It is recommended to participate class activities.

Lectrures continoues also via uploaded materrials to system - if exists.

Reading couse texbook, following lesson slides are under students' responsibility.

  1. Study of personality, culture, social values in cross-cultural perspective
  2. To gain knowledge regarding universalistic and relativistic approaches
  3. To understand the basic psychological processes within different cultures
  4. To gain knowledge regarding the fundamental domains of Cross-Cultural Psychology
