Course Objective

To learn the Ottoman alphabet and to read and understand the basic texts written in this alphabet and to gain the ability to benefit from these sources; To gain the ability to write simple sentences with the Ottoman alphabet; To gain the ability to understand whether the word is Turkish, Arabic or Persian.

Course Content

Ottoman Turkish is the language of our ancestors. Learning this language is very important to us Turks; because through this writing we should teach the history and culture of a long period belonging to our past to future generations with the help of this writing. With this thought, it is aimed to teach the general structure of Ottoman Turkish in our school, writing and reading with Ottoman Turkish and to teach Ottoman Turkish alphabet. Basic knowledge of Ottoman Turkish, writing rules and text studies are other works to be done in this course programme.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. S/he translates the texts of Arabic origin from the Pre-Republican period to Turkish alphabet of Latin origin.
  2. S/he rewrites the text with the transcription alphabet in Ottoman Turkish.
  3. S/he knows Ottoman Turkish which forms the 2nd period of the Western Turkish.
  4. S/he learns to read the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin.
  5. S/he improves the ability to write the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin.
  6. S/he reads printed texts about literature.
  7. S/he comprehends the structure of Persian completions.
  8. S/he recognizes texts written in Ottoman Turkish.
  9. S/he recognizes the Ottoman works and the characteristics of these works.
  10. S/he knows the spelling of words and suffixes of Turkish origin.
  11. S/he writes Turkish with Ottoman letters.
  12. S/he transcribes Turkish texts with Arabic letters.
  13. S/he reads documents and books about education in Ottoman Archives and libraries.
