Faculty of Health Sciences · Social Work · Undergraduate

ECTS: 5 T+P+L: 2+0+0 Departmental Elective
Coordinator: Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Mehmet GEDİK

Course Objective

This course aims to examine the significance of spiritual support services in human and societal relationships through the holistic approach of the social work discipline. Within the scope of the course, spiritual support practices and fundamental values are analyzed from a “Society-Environment-Religion” perspective within the framework of the ecosystem approach in social work. By highlighting the socio-cultural differences between secular, spiritual, and religion-based social work approaches, the course emphasizes that social work is a discipline grounded in human rights. It aims for students to comprehend and apply an eclectic approach to social work in practice.

The course also explores the intersection of social work with healthcare and medical services, with a particular focus on palliative care and support services as a case study for spiritual support-based social work approaches. In this context, positivist/reductionist and secular social work approaches are compared with spiritual and religion-based social work models. The necessity of addressing social work within the framework of human rights and social policy, while considering global, national, and regional differences, is underscored.

Additionally, the institutionalization process of spiritual support services in Türkiye is examined through various case studies. In this context, the course aims to equip students with knowledge and skills related to social work specialization areas, enabling them to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

Course Content

Within the scope of this course, the definitions of social work, human rights, and social policy are examined, and their relationship with the core values of spiritual support services is analyzed. The significance of a holistic approach in spiritual support services is emphasized, while secular, religious, and spiritually based social work models are comparatively analyzed. Additionally, the commonalities and distinctions between “Grace-Based, Rights-Based, and Duty/Rights-Based” approaches in spiritual support services are explored in detail. A key component of this course is the examination of the intersections between spiritual support services and healthcare and medical services. In particular, the application of religious and spiritually based social work approaches in palliative care and support services is analyzed. Comparisons are made between positivist and secular social work approaches and religious-spiritual social work approaches from a critical perspective. Furthermore, the institutionalization process of spiritual support services in Türkiye is assessed through case studies at the micro (individual), mezzo (family and non-governmental organizations), and macro (institutions and organizations) levels. In this context, the course aims to equip students with knowledge and skills related to social work specialization areas, enabling them to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical applications effectively.
