HEM 320 - Disaster Management

Course Objective

More than 90% of earthquakes in our country, especially earthquakes, sellers and landslides have caused significant loss of life and property throughout history and affected our economic development. The increasing population and urbanization will increase these effects in the future. Therefore, taking the necessary measures to minimize the negative effects of disasters, making preparations, raising public awareness, and especially training of managers in disaster management is a task that must be done immediately.

Course Content

This course covers the definition of disasters, types of disasters (earthquake, floods, landslide, fire, nuclear accidents, etc.), disaster and precaution in Turkey and disaster preparedness services (organization, planning, establishment of alarm system and management, community awareness, , the role of local governments in the prevention and management of disasters, health services for disasters (community awareness, determination of health needs and resources in case of disasters, acute phase initiatives in disasters: rescue, transport and disposal, triage, organization of disaster relief activities, rehabilitation services).

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. He/She defines the concept of disaster.
  2. He/She classifies disasters.
  3. He/She explains the precautions to be taken against earthquakes.
  4. It describes individual precautions to take against disasters such as fire, flood, landslide, and avalanche.
  5. He/She refers to the actions that need to be taken within the scope of the disaster management process (in the phases of risk/damage reduction, disaster preparedness, response, and recovery).
  6. He/She describes nursing interventions based on the health impacts of the disaster.
  7. He/She explains the difference between disaster triage and daily triage.
  8. He/She lists the precautions to be taken in CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) incidents.
