Course Objective

Learning, skill, concept etc. of Life Science curriculum. The aim of this course is to determine the distribution of the achievements of the themes included in the program by the teachers.

Course Content

The objective, concepts, and content of the Life Science course, the historical development of the Life Science course in Turkey, and approaches to the Life Science course in other countries; examination of the Life Science curriculum in terms of gains, skills, concepts, etc., distribution of themes in the curriculum and the gains included in these themes by classes, fundamental teaching skills in Life Science education, studies-examples related to the use of teaching strategies, methods and techniques in Life Science course, use of resources and materials in Life Science education, values and democracy education in the Life Science course, sample applications related to the Life Science Program, and evaluation of in-class activities.

Explanations

Starting from the third week, student presentations will be held following the lectures.

Presentations are based on the selection of one of the 6 units/themes found in the Life Sciences curriculum for grades 1, 2, and 3. The tasks to be carried out within this scope and their weighting in grading are as follows:

  • Preparing a sample lesson plan
  • Designing materials according to the plan
  • Conducting a sample application

The criteria for evaluating the presentations are as follows:

  • Proper preparation of the lesson plan (25%)
  • Development of activities and materials aligned with the learning outcome(s) (25%)
  • Instruction adapted to different learning styles (25%)
  • Classroom management and ensuring active learning (25%)

Presentations will be graded out of 100 points, and every student is required to deliver a lesson presentation.

The weighting in the overall course grading will be as follows:

  • Presentations: 25%
  • Midterm exam: 25%
  • Final exam: 50% The midterm and final exams will include multiple-choice and open-ended questions.

Rules

Attendance is mandatory for the class.

The student is obliged to conduct research and deliver a class presentation on the unit/theme they selected, in accordance with the predetermined criteria.

  2. Being able to recognize student characteristics and learning styles in the Life Sciences course
  3. To be able to define the implementation processes related to the constructivist approach in the Life Studies course.
  4. To be able to define the strategies, methods, and techniques that can be used in the Life Studies course.
  5. To be able to plan instructional activities for the Life Studies course.
  6. To be able to explain the purpose and importance of using technology and materials in Life Studies instruction.
  7. To be able to explain assessment and evaluation approaches in Life Studies instruction.
  8. To be able to explain the teaching and stages of concepts, skills, and values in the Life Sciences course.
  9. To be able to analyze Life Studies textbooks in terms of scope, format, content, and other aspects.
  10. Being able to explain the definition, scope, and history of the Life Sciences course
