Department Overview

History is a branch of science that draws on almost all of the social sciences. Other disciplines such as theology, sociology, philology, diplomacy, law and economics are considered auxiliary sciences of history. As the geography where our country is located lies at the crossroads of ancient civilizations, political and diplomatic developments are constantly attributed to history. History, which has a longer past than many other disciplines, can be regarded as having an established tradition in our country in terms of the studies carried out over centuries. Compared with other disciplines, it also has a field of publications and research that is worldwide and widely cited.

Considering that the history of dozens of states in our immediate surroundings can be researched from the Ottoman archives, the importance of the Department of History increases even further. It is easy to see that, with knowledge of Russian, Persian, Italian, Spanish and other Central European languages, some of the world's most original and valuable historical research can only be done in our country.

In our age, when the importance of the social sciences is steadily increasing, our programme aims to train the historians needed by our country and neighbouring countries. To achieve this goal, the Ottoman Archives, the Presidency of Manuscripts, the Beyazıt Library, the IRCICA Library and the İSAM Research Center in Istanbul are among the most important resources. The pedagogical formation courses to be offered by the Faculty of Education within our University will also open another door for our graduates to be appointed as teachers.
