Current Issues of the Turkish Legal System
Current issues of the Turkish legal system were discussed at IZU. Based on the 2024 Monitoring Report prepared by the ILKE Foundation, the meeting included evaluations on criminal and civil judiciary, judicial processes, practical challenges, and structural problems.
The program titled “Current Issues of the Turkish Legal System – ILKE Foundation Legal Monitoring Report 2024,” organized by the Faculty of Law at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, was held at the Abdullah Tivnikli Conference Hall. The event, attended by IZU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Nihat Erdoğmuş, Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ateş, academics, members of the legal community, and students, addressed current issues within the legal system.
MONITORING REPORTS ARE IMPORTANT IN IDENTIFYING PRACTICAL DEFICIENCIES
The opening speeches of the program, which examined the 2024 Monitoring Report prepared by the ILKE Foundation to build a bridge between practice and academia, were delivered by Prof. Dr. Nihat Erdoğmuş and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ateş. The speakers emphasized the importance of addressing current issues of the legal system on a scholarly basis and highlighted the value of monitoring and evaluation reports in identifying practical deficiencies, making structural problems visible, and discussing possible solutions.
ÇİÇEK: “A MULTIDIMENSIONAL APPROACH IS IMPORTANT IN STRENGTHENING THE SENSE OF JUSTICE”
Evaluating the 2024 Monitoring Report from the perspective of “Criminal Justice,” Assistant Professor Tahsin Furkan Çiçek from the IZU Faculty of Law discussed procedural practices in criminal proceedings, the effectiveness of judicial processes, and the right to seek legal remedies. Pointing out that the problems encountered in criminal justice are not merely technical issues related to practice, Çiçek emphasized the necessity of addressing this field with its structural and systematic dimensions. He stated that evaluating these issues through a multidimensional approach would contribute both to strengthening judicial practice and reinforcing the sense of justice.
ÖNER: “FIELD EXPERIENCE AND ACADEMIC STUDIES SHOULD BE EVALUATED TOGETHER”
Sharing his evaluations within the context of “Civil Justice,” Attorney Ahmet Sait Öner focused on litigation processes, the workload of courts, the predictability of decisions, and current practical issues. Noting that the problems experienced in civil justice are significant in terms of concluding trials within a reasonable time and ensuring legal certainty, Öner emphasized that assessing academic studies together with field experience enhances the capacity to produce solutions. In this regard, he stated that monitoring reports present the current situation in a comprehensive manner and enable the development of sound and sustainable solutions for practice.
