A Mevlevi Ceremony Was Performed at IZU on the Occasion of Şeb-i Arûs
At the Şeb-i Arûs program organized on the occasion of the 752nd anniversary of the passing of Mevlâna Jalaluddin Rumi, the Bayâtî Mevlevi Âyin-i Şerîf composed by Derviş Kûçek Mustafa Efendi was performed.
The Şeb-i Arûs program described by Mevlâna Jalaluddin Rumi as “the day I reunite with my greatest beloved, my Lord,” and which he regarded not as mourning but as a “wedding night” was held at the Abdullah Tivnikli Conference Hall. Opening remarks were delivered by IZU Chairman of the Board of Trustees Özkan Göksal and IZU Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar. Dean of the IZU Faculty of Islamic Sciences Prof. Dr. Hasan Kamil Yılmaz spoke about the spiritual legacy Mevlâna left to the Islamic world and the symbolism of the Âyin-i Şerîf.
GÖKSAL: MEVLÂNA DOES NOT NEED US, BUT WE NEED HIM
IZU Chairman of the Board of Trustees Özkan Göksal emphasized that Mevlâna, admired by the entire world, deserves far more than being commemorated once a year: “Amid the hardships of the century we live in, we have sent many great figures like Mevlâna into obscurity. Yet each of them is the Mimar Sinan of their own field. We see the Süleymaniye, but we do not see the Masnavi or Fîhi Mâ Fîh. To build our own civilization, we need to know them and understand the world of wisdom they represent.”
ACAR: MEVLÂNA GUIDES US
IZU Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cevat Acar stated that modern people neglect their spiritual dimension and said: “Spiritual masters like Mevlâna represent an important aspect of Islam. In moments when we are consumed by the worries of daily life, they guide us and help us regain our awareness.”
YILMAZ: THE ÂYIN-I ŞERÎF IS A REMEMBRANCE
Prof. Dr. Hasan Kamil Yılmaz shared important insights on the symbolism of the sema: “Through his sema, Mevlâna presents symbols related to the primordial covenant. The Âyin-i Şerîf represents the human spiritual journey. The sikke symbolizes the gravestone, and the tennure worn by the semazen represents the shroud. The semazen represents the seeker of truth, and the sema represents the plain of resurrection. Therefore, it is not enough to merely watch the Âyin-i Şerîf; one must accompany it inwardly with remembrance.”
The program concluded with the performance of Derviş Kûçek Mustafa Efendi’s Bayâtî Mevlevi Âyin-i Şerîf, under the artistic direction of Prof. Dr. Mehmet Öncel, Head of the IZU Music Education Department.
