Graduate Education Institute · Urbanism and Urban Transformation · Doctorate

ECTS: 7.5 T+P+L: 3+0+0 Departmental Elective
Coordinator: Doç. Dr. Şahika ÖZDEMİR

Course Objective

Urbanization, in a narrow sense, describes the number of cities and the population living in cities. The urban population is the result of the difference between births and deaths in favor of the ones, and at the same time with the arrivals from the villages and towns, that is, with migration. In the cities of developing countries, as fertility tendencies are decreasing, urbanization is nourished by the influx of population, which is mostly from villagers to cities. The narrow definition of urbanism is demographic. However, urbanization is perceived to be incomplete if it is seen as a mere population movement. For this reason, when defining urbanization, it is necessary to include historical and cultural bases that create population movement. The main aim of the course is to explain the historical processes of urbanization and its effects on urbanization.
