Course Objective

This course familiarises the students with the role of money, central bank, financial markets and financial institutions in the economy.  The course draws the links between the financial system and economic activity in a country. This would enable students to apply the knowledge that they get from this course in making economic decisions as well as assisting them to comprehend and evaluate the current economic situations.

Course Content

The course discusses the role of money, central bank, financial markets and financial institutions in the economy.  It draws the links between the financial system and economic activity in a country. Students are being exposed to discussions on the determination of interest rates and the role of the central bank in implementing monetary policy to ensure a stable financial system.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. To provide an understanding of the workings of money, financial markets and financial institutions within the financial system of a country.
  2. To provide an understanding of the theories and policy issues in the field of money and banking.
  3. To enable students to make better-informed decision as a consumer, saver, borrower or a business manager.
  4. To enable students to understand conventional financial theories as a pre-requisite for higher level Islamic Banking and Finance courses.
