Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to examine the social foundation of the family institution in the Western and Turkish literature with the outline of the structure of the family nowadays.The structure and formation of family in social life; its functioning as a social institution, its importance and its relationship with other sociological phenomena.

Course Content

The course examines the various approaches and perspectives on family sociology.Concepts such as marriage, divorce, child rearing, kinship, domestic violence, family planning, family relations, gender and family, family relations and social norms and relations with institutions.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the sociological transformations of family, marriage and kinship in Turkey
  2. In Turkey, family, marriage and kinship acquire the ability to predict possible transitions in a sociological context
  3. Understands the structure of the family institution, its functioning and its relationship with other social institutions and social norms.
  4. Develops a sociological perspective on concepts such as marriage, divorce, kinship, child-parent relationship.
  5. It develops a critical view on domestic violence and gender issues.
  6. Turkey and have knowledge on the changing family structure and income levels in the world to discuss.
  7. Comprehends the use and representation of the family institution in the public sphere and in the media.
