Course Objective
This course discusses planning history and theories in the context of capitalist urbanization processes of modern society. The aim of this course is to examine how and why planning, which is a form of intervention, has emerged in the last two centuries, from which phases, and how it reproduces and shapes cities in different scales interacting with capitalist urbanization. In this context, the urban practices of post-1980 period are examined in a historical perspective and contemporary debates and new theoretical approaches are examined in planning.
Course Content
The industrial revolution and the urbanization of capitalist societies in the process of development. The development and different manifestations of planning as a form of intervention. Theoretical discussions in planning, the different planning styles and the role of the planner. Problems of industrial society and visionaries. High modernism and criticism. Decentralization and metropolitan development after the Second World War. The post-1980 economic restructuring process, global urban-territories, mega-cities, new urban policies and planning dilemmas. Urban transformation and gentrification. New theoretical debates in urban crisis and planning: Urbanism, communicative approach and planning together, Just city concepts
Course Learning Outcomes
- Students will learn new theoretical debates emerging in the context of post-1980 economic, social and spatial transformations.
- Students will explore the different forms of intervention that occur in different periods, the role of the planner, and theoretical debates that arise in planning.
- Within the last two centuries, students will examine the relationship between industrialization, urbanization and planning within the cause-and-effect relationships.
