Course Objective
The purpose of this course is to introduce students with a broad array of issues and concepts that are central to the history of sociology. During the course of the semester, we will examine the basic issues, concepts, and theories of sociology, the philosophical foundations of different sociological theories, and the fundamental ideas and approaches of prominent figures of sociology. From Plato to Max Weber, a wide range of sociological ideas will be introduced in order for students to acquaint with the fundamentals of contemporary sociology. While exploring each of these issues in different historical contexts, we will also consider how they inform our understanding of contemporary understanding of sociology, such as power, class, gender, social change and religion.
Course Content
This course is about the study of necessary foundations in the major thinkers and pioneers of sociological thought such as Comte, Marx, Weber and Durkheim. It will undertake the development of sociology under certain historical stages starting from Ancient Greece to the contemporary times. By deliniating and elucidating on the historical formation of sociological theories, this course will help students understand current social issues and problems.
