POL 420 - Turkish Foreign Policy

Course Objective

The aim of this course is to develop in students a detailed understanding of Turkish foreign policy since the late Ottoman period.

Course Content

This course introduces students to the historical development of Turkish foreign policy. It looks at the determinants of Turkish foreign policy and the ideas, discourses, institutions and key actors in making and practice of Turkish foreign policy. It analyses the key issues and identifies the main challenges in Turkish foreign policy. The course also examines continuity and change in Turkish foreign policy with a focus on regional and global developments.

  1. Describe and analyse the determinants of Turkish foreign policy
  2. Identify the key actors in Turkish foreign policy making in different periods of time
  3. Explain the change and continuity in Turkish foreign policy
  4. Describe and analyse the Turco-Greek problems, the Cyprus dispute, Turkey's relations with the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Central Asia, as well as the Turco-European and Turco-American relations
  5. Analyse the causes and the consequences of the crises and problems between Turkey and its neighbours
  6. Demonstrate the ability to articulate ideas to others in a clear and concise manner both orally and in a written format
