Course Objective
This course analyzes the relationship between civil society and democracy with special reference to the Turkish politics. It begins with a detailed analysis of the basic issues regarding the concept of civil society and democracy such as public and private spheres, center-periphery relations, strong state, citizenship, liberty, identity and nationalism, multiculturalism and ethnicity and then turns to draw the picture of Turkish political system in the framework of these concepts. It pays attention specifically to the issues on civil society and democracy around such concepts as environment, women's movement, human rights, political participation, ethnicity, modernization, civilization and liberalization.
