Course Objective

The aim of the course is to introduce students both to the communalities and to the differences between different European states and to equip them with the knowledge analytical tools to enable them to go on to more advanced study in the field of European politics in general.

Course Content

This course provides a thematically organized comparative introduction to governance and politics of Europe. The course focuses on political, economic and social challenges facing European governments and how the countries of Europe managing these problems. It looks at a representative range of European countries and the European Union itself in a comparative perspective.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Recognize the various countries and states in Europe and their differing socio-political characters and political structures and processes;
  2. Relate historical and social factors on the one hand the success or otherwise of different political systems on the other;
  3. Analyse and systematically compare different political systems across the whole of Europe.
  4. Critically assess political issues, political processes and events across Europe;
  5. Demonstrate the ability to articulate ideas to others in a clear and concise manner both orally and in a written format.
