Course Objective

Examining the historical context from Ottoman Modernization Quest to Modern Turkey and understanding the codes of Modern Turkey. Evaluating chritical thresholds such as changes, transformation, reforms, military coups that are experienced in the emergence of the concept of Modern Turkey. To enable students to learn the historical process that shaped Modern Turkey and to solve the underlying motives of the process. Additionally, to ensure that students learn about the last period of the Ottoman Empire, the committee of union and progress, republic period, reforms, one-party and multi-party period,  and the military coups. 

Course Content

Description of Modernization, Modernization Efforts in the Ottoman Empire, Charter of Alliance, Edict of Reform, Young Ottoman Movement, I.Constitution and II.Constitution Period, The Ottoman Basic Law,  Union and Progress Period, National Struggle Period and Establishment of Republic of Turkey, Reforms and One-Party Period, Trials of Progressive of Republican Party and Free Republician Party will be taught under the course. In addition, Multi-party period and Adnan Menderes, the first prime minister in multi-party period, and Military Coups taken place in 1960, 1971 and 1980, and midterms will be included in the course content.

  3. Will be able to express the founding principles of the new Turkey.
  4. Will be able to comprehend political, social and cultural developments, continuities and ruptures from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey.
