Course Objective
The aim of this course is to learn the tissues and organs of the immune system, the characteristics of natural and acquired immunity, the structure and functions of antigens and antibodies, and to explain the immunological mechanisms in detail.
Course Content
Natural and acquired immunity; Antibodies and their classification; Antigen identification and receptors; Antigen and antibody interactions; Immune response anatomy; Vaccinations; Immunodeficiency
Required Resources
Ivan Roitt, Jonathan Brostoff, David Male, David Roth, Victoria Male, Immunology, 9th edition, Elsevier, 2020
Explanations
There will be weekly quizzes, assignments, two midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam. 1. Quizzes will be in the last 20 minutes of the last lesson of the week and the content will be the topics of the previous week. No make-up will be given for quizzes in any way; However, your two lowest quiz scores will not be included in your overall evaluation. 2.Exam dates are as announced in the table. The subjects of the exams will be announced a reasonable time in advance. Make-up exams will be given for exams not taken within the framework of excuses accepted according to IZU regulations. 3.The final exam covers the topics covered throughout the semester. Final exam day, time and place will be announced by the Dean's Office.
Rules
Attendance: According to the regulations, if a student does not attend 30% of the total course hours, he/she will be absent from the course (DZ) and fail. Arriving Late: You are expected to not only come to class but also attend class on time. Please note that arriving late to 3 classes will be counted as 1 complete absence. Arriving late to class is defined as follows: The instructor takes class attendance and attends class after the first 10 minutes of class. Getting Help: It is important for your education that you learn the subject on time by asking your questions about the course during the lesson or during office hours. We recommend that our students get help when necessary. Academic honesty: It is expected that the work that will be the subject of the course grade is entirely your own effort and work. In immoral cases such as plagiarism and copying, a disciplinary investigation will be initiated and you will be subject to the necessary penal sanctions in accordance with the relevant regulations of IZU. The evaluations stated in this syllabus are fixed and no extra compensation will be made to increase the grade.
Course Learning Outcomes
- The student will have knowledge about the immune system and its types, which form the basis of immunology.
- The student will be informed about the organs and cells that make up the immune system.
- The student will have information about antigen, its types and antigen-recognizing receptors.
- The student will be informed about antibodies and their types and the immune response mechanisms that develop depending on them.
- The student will have knowledge about the molecules and pathways involved in the regulation of the immune response
- The student will be informed about vaccines and immunodeficiency
