MIM 427 - Space Analysis

Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences · Interior Architecture and Environmental Design · Undergraduate

ECTS: 3 T+P+L: 2+0+0 Departmental Elective
Coordinator: Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ahmet KURNAZ
Instructors: Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ahmet KURNAZ

Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with the theoretical and practical foundation necessary to interpret, analyze, and evaluate architectural space through its physical, functional, perceptual, and experiential dimensions, and to integrate the resulting spatial data into the architectural design process. Within the scope of the course, students are expected to analyze an existing or historic building or space through themes such as users, circulation, accessibility, thresholds, scale, materials, light, atmosphere, memory, and potential patterns of use. Based on these analyses, they are encouraged to develop an interpretive design proposal that responds to the spatial qualities and characteristics of the selected environment.

Course Content

The course covers the concept of spatial analysis, the fundamental components of architectural space, the relationship between users, activities, and space, circulation and accessibility analysis, wayfinding, spatial hierarchy, thresholds and focal points, perceptual and experiential readings of space, as well as the roles of light, materials, texture, atmosphere, and spatial memory. Throughout the course, students will prepare analytical presentation boards based on a selected existing or historic building or space. Following the midterm submission, they will evaluate their analytical findings by identifying key issues and potentials, and subsequently develop a small-scale design proposal, such as an adaptive reuse strategy, spatial intervention, exhibition design, or experiential design, informed by their analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Mimari mekân analizi ile ilgili temel kavramları, yöntemleri ve temsil araçlarını kavrar
  2. Bir mekânı fiziksel bileşenleri, mekânsal organizasyonu, ölçek, oran, sınır, eşik, odak ve yönlenme ilişkileri üzerinden analiz eder
  3. Students evaluate the relationship between spatial design and its implementation within the context of building ventilation, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, and active and passive fire protection systems in buildings.
  4. Mekân analizi sonucunda elde ettiği verileri diyagram, eskiz, fotoğraf, plan, kesit ve pafta diliyle temsil eder; analiz bulgularından hareketle mekâna yönelik tasarım yaklaşımları geliştirir
