Course Objective

This course aims to introduce industrial engineering students to the structures of engineering materials, the basics of mechanical behaviors and manufacturing characteristics, to teach the transformation process from manufacturing technology to raw material to product, and to gain the skill of manufacturing process and resource planning.

Course Content

An overview of engineering materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, ...), basic knowledge of manufacturing materials between basic materials and manufacturing technology, and the behavior and manufacturing characteristics of these materials in manufacturing, metal casting technology, shaping procedures, sheet metal processing, , joining methods and modern manufacturing methods and the machine-tool, work place, workpiece, process and process characteristics and the factors affecting these processes, production of cost components as well as basic work safety and environmental information in manufacturing are taken place. The importance of material science, atomic structure; Bonds, crystal; Molecular and amorphous structures; Structure property relationships; Crystal defects (point defects, dislocations, surface defects); Melting solidification; Diffusion; Phase diagrams; Electrical properties of materials; Magnetic properties of materials; Thermal and mechanical properties; Oxidation; Corrosion information; Corrosion information.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. 1) Learn how to make engineering materials used in the design and manufacture of products and goods, and how to make them with various production and manufacturing methods and procedures.
  2. 2) Comprehend the common aspects of modern manufacturing and manufacturing in a competitive manufacturing environment.
  3. 3) Recognize and classify manufacturing processes and gain the attitude of engineering materials in different manufacturing processes.
  4. 4) In the main manufacturing processes, it is possible to calculate the speed and duration of production, necessary forces and make suitable machine, machine selection.
  5. 5) Evaluate manufacturing process characteristics and factors affecting the process in terms of planning.
