Course Objective
The objective of this course is to study signal propagation and wireless channels in different environments to analyze wireless communication technologies.
Course Content
Introduction to Mobile and Personal Communication Systems, Fundamentals of wireless communication systems, Wireless Signal Transmission, Cellular communication, Wireless mobile radio channels (Large and small scale fading), Wireless Communication Networks (WLAN, WPAN, WiFi), Digital Modulation, Multiple Access technology (TDMA, FDMA, CDMA), wireless signal propagation and antennas, Satellite communication systems, Student Presentations.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Recognize the fundamentals of wireless communication systems and technology.
- Understand wireless communication channels and the basics of radio signal propagation (including multipath effects and channel models).
- Explain concepts such as radio channel models, interference-limited communication, coding, modulation, anti-fading and balancing with receiver and transmitter antenna diversity techniques.
- Define concepts such as frequency reuse, cellular hierarchy, sectorization, intercellular transitions and power control.
- Examine the new personal communication systems and communication services.
- Define important terminologies and concepts (e.g., wireless mobile, cellular, mobility, data/voice/multimedia, circuit-switched, packet-switched).
- Present the various systems and standards developed (including 4G and 5G systems), and basic design problems.
- Explain spread spectrum techniques (DSSS code division multiple access (CDMA), frequency hopping).
- Use MATLAB software for wireless communication simulations and project implementations, work in teams and write reports.
