Course Objective
The aim of this course is to develop the statistical thinking and data literacy skills of prospective mathematics teachers, building upon the theoretical knowledge gained in the Probability course; to enable them to make statistical inferences about the population from a sample; to analyze real-life and educational data using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical methods; and to interpret the obtained statistical results accurately, critically, and contextually with the support of technology.
Course Content
Statistical thinking and the statistical research process; concepts of population, sample, parameters, and statistics; data types and sampling methods; review of fundamental concepts of descriptive statistics; sampling variability and sampling distributions; the role of the Central Limit Theorem in statistical inference; standard error; point and interval estimation; confidence intervals; basic logic of hypothesis testing; null and alternative hypothesis; significance level and p-value; Type I and Type II errors; one-sample, independent sample, and paired-sample t-tests; categorical data and an introduction to the chi-square independence test; correlation and causality; simple linear regression; technology-assisted analysis, interpretation, and reporting of real datasets.
