POL 039 - Türkiye'de Sivil Toplum ve Demokrasi

The basic aim of this course is threefold. The first one is to present the major theoretical discussions on the concept of civil society. The second one is to draw portray of civil society in the world, particularly in reference to the experience of liberal and socialist societies. And the last one is to analyze the development of civil society in Turkey in a historical perspective. You will see the dynamics of Turkish civil society and democracy from Ottoman background up to the 2000s. The organizations and actors of civil society, their relationship with the state and their function to play the role of democratic civil society will be discussed in detail.
